We are very pleased to be working on behalf of the Falklands Islands Government to appoint their new Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo). This a truly exciting position and will offer the right candidate the experience of a lifetime.
The Falkland Islands is a British Overseas Territory, with a full internal self-government, it covers a land area of 4700 square miles (12,000 square kilometres) and a coastline estimated at 800 miles (1,300 km). The archipelago consists of two main islands: West Falkland and East Falkland, and about 776 small and very small islands, mostly uninhabited. The Falkland Islands are a small, thriving, self-sufficient community with a British way of life, benefiting from excellent local services, beautiful scenery and the glorious absence of traffic jams!
Education on the Falkland Islands is unique. The Island's have a small population, with big ambitions. It will be your job to help turn these ambitions into reality.
As the SENCo on the Falkland Islands, it will be your responsibility to lead, develop and support the provision for young people with special educational needs and disabilities across the ages of 3-16 years. The children have a range of needs across four broad categories of cognition and learning; communication and interaction; sensory and physical needs; social, emotional and mental health needs. You will be experienced in working with children across all these areas of additional needs, have up-to-date and relevant knowledge as well as holding the National Award for SENCo and a Qualified Teacher Status.
You will be working across the Primary and Secondary schools, both of which house specialist SEND resources and classrooms. Both schools deliver the 2014 English National Curriculum, and are inspected following the OFSTED framework for inspections, however they are outside the English system so procure an inspection service.
You will become a member of the Senior Leadership Team for both schools, and work alongside the Director of Education, Head Teachers and School Managers to contribute to the school improvement plans, whole-school policy and monitoring of pupil progress and teaching standards.
The FIG and the island will offer a warm welcome to the successful candidate (and their family!) with a generous relocation package and housing at a heavily discounted rate.
Professionally, you will be an inspirational leader, with qualified teacher status, the National Award for SENCo and a wealth of experience within SEN and teaching.
You will be motivating, leading and supporting a passionate team of Learning Support Assistants and Teachers, providing professional guidance and knowledge of current SEND trends, policies and provisions. Showing commitment and passion to equal opportunities and securing good outcomes for all pupils with SEND requirements is paramount to being successful within this role.
Being an organised, innovative and solutions-led leader with excellent communication skills, you will possess the confidence to liaise with outside agencies, parents and teachers. You will also oversee the writing, regular review, and monitoring of individual education, behaviour, health and care plans, including reviewing changes and progression with parents and carers.
Personally, you will be an enthusiastic individual, with a sense of adventure! Whether you are a nature lover, budding photographer or just love spending time in the great outdoors - The Falkland Islands is the place for you.
