Job Title: Behaviour Mentor (Supporting Children with ASD/Autism)
Location: Wheatley, Oxfordshire
Pay Rate: £14 - £15 per hour
Hours: Full-Time/Part-Time (depending on availability)
Job Description:
We are seeking a compassionate, dedicated, and proactive Behaviour Mentor to support children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other related special educational needs within a school setting in Wheatley, Oxfordshire. You will be working closely with teaching staff, SENCo, and other professionals to provide tailored support that enhances learning, development, and emotional well-being for students with ASD.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide 1:1 or small group support to children with ASD/Autism, helping them access the curriculum and achieve their learning goals.
Work collaboratively with class teachers to implement individualised education plans (IEPs) and ensure that the specific needs of each child are met.
Use a variety of teaching techniques, including visual aids, sensory activities, and structured routines to support children's learning and development.
Assist with the social, emotional, and behavioural development of children, ensuring a safe and inclusive learning environment.
Support students during transitions between activities and throughout the school day, ensuring consistency and stability.
Maintain regular communication with teachers, parents, and the wider team to monitor progress and adapt support strategies as needed.
Provide assistance with personal care, where required.
Assist in managing challenging behaviour using de-escalation techniques, always promoting a positive and supportive environment.
Attend regular training and development sessions to stay informed of the latest practices in supporting children with ASD.
Key Skills & Experience:
Previous experience working with children with ASD/Autism or other related special educational needs, preferably within a school or educational setting.
Knowledge of effective strategies and interventions for supporting children with ASD, including sensory needs and communication difficulties.
Strong communication skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and families.
Patience, empathy, and a calm demeanour when working with challenging behaviours.
Ability to work as part of a team but also independently with initiative.
Basic understanding of safeguarding and child protection protocols.
Relevant qualifications in Special Educational Needs (SEN) are desirable but not essential.
Qualifications:
Minimum GCSEs in English and Maths (or equivalent).
Level 2 or 3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning (or willingness to work towards).
Training in Autism or SEN is highly advantageous.
