- Usual working pattern: Monday to Thursday 08:00 to 16:30 (With 30 minutes lunch)
- Fri 08:00 to 13:00 (No Break)
- 3 days minimum attendance (Tues / Wed / Thurs) in the Offices
Technical Author; Installation, Operation and Maintenance Manuals
The team delivers a wide range of high voltage transmission projects, using both AC and DC technologies, and is looking for a Technical Author to join the team and take responsibility for the creation and management of the project specific Installation, Operation and Maintenance Manual.
In this role, you will have responsibility to manage the equipment specific Operation and Maintenance Manuals, provided by the equipment suppliers, and collate and supplement this information in order to create a project specific manual that fully satisfies our client’s obligations and the expectations of the Client.

The business team is a turnkey project business that works with its internal and external partners to engineer, procure, construct and commission a wide range of projects associated with the bulk transmission of electrical power and management of electrical power grids.
These projects typically include:
- New high voltage DC transmission connections.
- New high voltage AC transmission substations
- Expansion and reinforcement of existing transmission substations and networks
- On and Offshore substations to facilitate windfarm connections and other renewable technologies.
- Network compensation and stability projects
- Energy Storage Projects
A key deliverable of all these projects is the ‘Installation, Operation and Maintenance Manual’. This comprehensive document provides essential details about the installation and equipment supplied. In addition to operating instructions, it provides maintenance personnel with detailed guidance on the work required to ensure assets reach their intended life and avoid unplanned shutdowns, and how to undertake the work in a safe manner. This role will generally include undertaking the following tasks:
• Reviewing the O&M Manuals provided by the equipment suppliers (OEM’s) to ensure that they contain the expected information, and it is presented in a clear, useable fashion.
• Reviewing the information provided by all other contributing parties, particularly the Civil and Building services contractors, to ensure that they fully cover the installation and equipment supplied, and it is presented in a clear, useable fashion.
• Supplementing the information provided by the contributing parties with additional narrative in order to bring together the individual documents and form a project specific manual.
• Create all necessary project specific documents, such as maintenance and lubrication schedules etc, in order to assist the future user of the manual to perform their work efficiently.
• Ensure that the manual is arranged in a logical way that helps the user to quickly find the information needed. In addition, ensure that any Customer requirements, in terms of structure or format, are met.
• Ensure that the manual clearly identifies the correct operating sequence of the equipment, and any potential hazards from mal-operation, that an operator of the equipment or system, should be aware of.
• Ensure that the manual clearly identifies any potential hazards that maintenance operatives should be aware of before undertaking planned or unplanned work on the equipment or system. This should include the identification of materials or substances used in the equipment that may constitute a concern.
• Ensure that the manual contains a clear list of recommended spares, in order that a future owner/operator has the option to obtain the parts needed for both planned maintenance and the timely repair of unplanned outages.
• Ensure that the manual contains sufficient information in order that the decommissioning and deconstruction of the asset can be carried out safely and ecologically.
• Should it form part of the contract, facilitate, through the engagement of the relative experts, training for the Customers operators and maintenance staff as required.
Requirements:
To succeed in this role, you will have the following qualification and experience: -
A first degree (or equivalent) in an engineering-based discipline (Or equivalent experience)
- More than 5 years’ experience working in a role where you are preparing detailed technical documents, for a range of equipment, preferable but not limited to, the domain of electrical engineering.
- Have a general appreciation of the operation and maintenance of plant and equipment, and the type and level of documents needed to undertake these activities successfully and safely.
Desired Characteristics:
The successful candidate will have a strong attention to detail and be familiar with writing technical documents for the operation and maintenance of plant and equipment.
You will be confident to discuss these topics with the equipment suppliers and other contributors, to ensure their offerings meet the required standards and the needs of the end user.
You will be comfortable presenting information to the Customer and generally representing the interests of our client in this domain.
You will be a team player, with good communication and interpersonal skills, be capable of self-management, and have a high degree of flexibility, resilience and a self-learning attitude.
