Horticulture Operative

Salary: 12.88 per hour

Shift Patterns/ Hours: Monday to Friday - 08:00 am to 16:00

Location: Gosport

Contract Length: 7 Months

Your role:

Contribute to the performance of the team; ensuring we maintain a high standard of service and support the Grounds Maintenance Supervisor and the Parks and Open Spaces Operations Manager in ensuring the Grounds Maintenance Team offers a customer focused service to help achieve continuous improvement and innovation in service delivery.

You will be responsible for:

• Grounds & Horticultural Maintenance - Carry out grass cutting, strimming, hedge trimming, seasonal flower and shrub bed maintenance, weeding, planting,
• Cemetery & Public Space Upkeep - Assist with grave digging, gardens of remembrance, hanging baskets, planters, litter picking, and tidying.
• Sports & Play Area Maintenance - Maintain sports turf (e.g., bowling greens, cricket squares, tennis courts), conduct play area inspections, and ensure ROSPA compliance.
• Chemical Spraying & Invasive Species Control - Use PA1/PA6-certified spraying methods to manage weeds and invasive plants.
• Equipment & Safety Compliance - Operate and maintain vehicles, machinery, and equipment, ensuring health & safety procedures, vehicle checks, and site inspections are followed.
• Other Duties - Support operations, including winter gritting, snow clearance, sandbag filling, and civic event preparations.

Skills/ Knowledge:

• NVQ Level 2 in Horticulture
• Experience in horticultural work, including grass cutting, strimming, hedge trimming, and using commercial mowers and blowers.
• Comfortable working outdoors
• Physically fit, reliable and punctual
• Strong understanding of health & safety, risk management, and manual handling principles
• Full clean manual driving licence
