The Opportunity
Our client is looking for an experienced and proactive Health and Safety Manager to uphold high standards of safety, health, and well-being within the construction, civil engineering, marine, and defence sectors.
The role
As the Health and Safety Manager, you will play a key role in promoting a strong safety culture throughout all project stages. A core responsibility will be to ensure full compliance with relevant health and safety regulations, including the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015. This includes providing expert guidance to senior leadership, project managers, and site teams, ensuring safety is integrated into all decisions and actions.

Your duties and responsibilities will be
Ensure the company’s activities comply with relevant health and safety regulations, including Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations. Promote adherence to statutory and local governance and best practices throughout the team. Provide expert advice on health and safety matters to senior leadership, project managers, and site teams.
Support the development, review, and update of the organisation’s health and safety policies and procedures, ensuring alignment with industry standards and project-specific requirements. Champion best practices and continuous improvement in health and safety management.
Review health and safety documentation generated by designers and contractors, including task-specific risk assessments and method statements for high-risk activities during pre-construction, construction, and operational phases. Close collaboration with stakeholders is crucial to ensuring local arrangements are adhered to.
Support the Principal Designer and Principal Contractor in identifying potential hazards and implementing effective risk control measures.
Develop and deliver training programs for staff and subcontractors to promote safety awareness and compliance. Foster a culture of positive safety through regular communications, workshops, and meetings.
Work collaboratively with team members to identify opportunities for improvement.
Interface with maintenance and operational teams to ensure coordination of health and safety across all functions.
Assist with the investigation of accidents, incidents, and near-misses, ensuring root causes are identified and corrective actions are taken. Maintain accurate records and prepare detailed reports for stakeholders.
Conduct regular site inspections and audits to monitor compliance with health and safety standards. Work with project teams to address non-conformities and ensure timely resolution of issues.
Work closely with design teams, contractors, and regulatory bodies to ensure health and safety requirements are integrated into project planning and execution.
Serve as the primary point of contact for external audits and health and safety queries.
Oversee Principal Contractor activities throughout all project stages, from pre-construction to handover, providing governance and assurance that work complies with regulatory standards.You will have the following qualifications & experience
Substantial experience in managing health and safety within construction, civil , Marine or defence sectors, including a understanding of statutory framework with particular emphasis on CDM regulations.
NEBOSH, HNC/HND or Degree in relevant discipline.
Membership with a recognised professional body such as IOSH or IIRSM.It’s great if you also have the following
Experience of working in a Nuclear regulated environment (or similar regulated industry)
Experience of the environmental aspects within the HSQE team.The setting for the role
Risks and Hazards are in line with working on a nuclear licenced site. These can include, nuclear fuel, radiation, chemicals and gasses, high voltage equipment, moving vehicles, flammable materials, high pressure circuits, steam, high noise and vibration levels. A full site induction will be provided and all safety requirements must be adhered to when entering the site.
