  • £39903/annum + relocation + bonus
Travelling Primary Teacher – The Falkland Islands £39903 per annum + bonus and relocation package (dependent on qualifications & experience) Are you a dynamic Primary Teacher with an adventurous side seeking a new challenge? Look no further! We are very pleased to be working on behalf of the Falklands Islands Government to appoint a new Travelling Primary Teacher to commence in January 2020. This a truly exciting position and will offer the right candidate the experience of a lifetime. The Falkland Islands is a British Overseas Territory, with a full internal self-government, it covers a land area of 4700 square miles (12,000 square kilometres) and a coastline estimated at 800 miles (1,300 km). The archipelago consists of two main islands: West Falkland and East Falkland, and about 776 small and very small islands, mostly uninhabited. The Falkland Islands are a small, thriving, self-sufficient community with a British way of life, benefiting from excellent local services, beautiful scenery and the glorious absence of traffic jams! The role Education on the Falkland Islands is unique. The Islands have a small population, with big ambitions. It will be your job to help turn these ambitions into reality. We are seeking to recruit a travelling teacher to work with a small number of children on who live on single-family sheep farms, spread across the remote, rural areas of the Falkland Islands. The settings are large ranch style sheep farms, covering large areas, with thousands of sheep. Travelling teachers deliver primary education to these children through a combined system of direct face to face teaching and telephone teaching. Firstly, the teacher travels to the farm where they will spend between 2 and 4 weeks living with the family and teaching the child or children (usually between 1-3 children) in a classroom in their home. The ‘classrooms’ are usually re-purposed rooms in the family home or a separate building or cabin close to the family home. After the initial period with the first family, the teacher moves onto the next of their locations, and so on, before repeating the ‘beat’. Each ‘beat’ lasts 6-7 weeks, which is roughly one half-term. There are opportunities, at least every half term, for teachers to travel back to the main school site in Stanley to restock and make their own social connections. The second part of this combined delivery of education takes over when the travelling teacher has moved onto the next family on the same ‘beat’. When this happens the children in the first family receive daily lessons via the telephone. These may be delivered by one of the teachers in the settlement schools, or a telephone teacher in Stanley, or with the travelling teacher themselves by phone, from their second location. The children then have follow-up homework to complete which they do with the support of their family. You will have access to a 4x4 vehicle to enable travel between the farms, and you will also be able to use the inter-island ferry and occasionally travel by light-aircraft around the islands. You will therefore need to hold a full driver’s licence and be confident travelling over rough tracks. In most cases, you will have a living space separate to the family home, sometimes self-catered, sometimes catered by the family. All locations have a dedicated school telephone line and internet access. Working as a travelling teacher is a truly unique opportunity where a teacher can experience a different way of life and a different environment while working within a familiar curriculum, doing the best job in the world! The person Professionally, you will be a resilient, practical, organised and self-motivated individual, with qualified teacher status and at least 2 years post NQT teaching experience. Experience across all areas of primary education, the 2014 English Curriculum and EYFS Statutory Framework are essential for this position. Teaching in this setting allows you to create a bespoke, personalised learning plan for each child you work with, outside of the constraints of whole class teaching. Personally, you should have a sense of adventure and an understanding, appreciation or interest in the farming community. You will need to be a self-sufficient problem solver and able to work successfully at a distance from the main school site. This is an unaccompanied post due to the nature of the travel and accommodation. The package & benefits * 1, 2, 3 or 4 Years Fixed Term Contract, with potential for extension by mutual agreement * Salary of up to £39,903 per annum – dependent on qualifications and experience * Reduced Tax rates * 35% gratuity allowance based on basic salary earned, paid at the end of the contract * A relocation package is available for the candidate * A flight allowance back to the UK for the candidate * Accommodation provided at each location - sometimes self-catered, sometimes catered by the family The Falkland Islands Government has appointed Protocol to support the recruitment of this position and for an informal and confidential discussion about this role contact Lauren Cartledge on the details provided. NO AGENCIES PLEASE
