Our client,one of the world's leading global defence, security and aerospace companies, require a number of mechanical design engineers for upgrade projects on armoured vehicles. Successful applicants will form part of a multi-disciplinary team providing Through Life Support to Land Systems armoured vehicle platforms via membership of the In-Service Support (ISS) Integrated Delivery Team. The specific role is to devise mechanical design solutions for in-service military vehicles, their derivatives and support equipment for one of the engineering groups based in either Telford or Washington. Main responsibilities and duties could include but not be limited to: • Assisting in the analysis of customer requirements. • Working with Mechanical Engineers, create 3-D CAD models and design schemes, 2-D detail designs and production data packs using Unigraphics NX and/or PTC Creo CAD packages for the solution of design problems. • Definition and control of interfaces via interface control drawings and space envelopes. • The generation of design and/or manufacturing information via the production of concept designs, detailed component drawings, CAD models and drawings to a recognised standard (e.g. BS 8888). • Assisting in the validation of systems / equipment, this may include the generation of test schedules, test and integration plans and the writing/investigation of test problem reports. • Inputting and management of data in the business PDM system (TeamCenter) • Supplier liaison during prototype and production manufacture. • Assisting in trade studies and supplier selection, including equipment / supplier surveys and selection. • Assisting in the generation of system procurement specifications and schedules of work. • Participation in internal and external meetings or design reviews with the customer. • Undertaking minor development trials and tests, both in house and at external agencies. • The generation and review of technical reports • Working with Safety Engineers to ensure that support products Safety risks are As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP). Additional Information Pre-requisites: • Be self-motivated and be able to work with the minimum of supervision in a team environment to achieve completion of task milestones within defined budgets. • Have a working knowledge of a business system such as SAP and Product Data Management system such as TeamCentre. • Be able to exhibit good Health & Safety awareness • Have an awareness of the security implications for technical material • Knowledge of MS Office preferably including MS Project • Be able to demonstrate commercial awareness Experience / Qualifications The candidate will have been educated to degree level or equivalent in a relevant discipline with at least 3 years postgraduate experience within an engineering environment, or to HNC level with 5 years relevant experience. Good interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills are essential, together with a high level of interest in technical problem solving. This role will report to the Electrical Engineering Lead in either Washington / Telford with occasional travel to the alternative site and suppliers within the UK. The role will support the system level electrical design activities required to integrate third party subsystems into military armoured fighting vehicles. The activities performed by an Electrical Designer shall include, but are not limited to: • Development of design material for the electrical installation of armoured fighting vehicle subsystems including o Design specifications o System wiring diagrams o Harness diagrams and pin-out o Electrical installation drawings • Generation and maintenance of power budgets for 28V DC vehicle subsystems • Development of vehicle based electrical power generation, conversion and distribution • Application of Defence Standards for design of electrical equipment; Def Stans 23-09, 61-05 and 59-41 • Ensuring adherence to the project earthing shielding policy • Preparation of harness design specifications, component selection and supplier liaison • Development of fault tolerant equipment with reversionary modes of operation • Development of electrical protection systems • Liaison with other functional departments and team members • Requirements management and production of technical specifications • Development and conduct of test/trials plans and procedures • Consideration of safety, risk, reliability and maintainability associated with the technical solution, in conjunction with subject matter experts. General Engineering Responsibilities: • Provide engineering input to project submissions including cost estimating and project plans • Generate progress reports and update task planning information and budgets • Perform project activities as allocated by the Project Management team • Produce and review engineering drawings, technical reports, meeting minutes and visit reports • Develop material and attend design reviews • Presentation of engineering material in internal stakeholders and customers As a Electrical Designer your skills and qualifications will ideally include: HNC/Degree qualified in a relevant engineering discipline with a minimum of 5 years engineering experience in a suitable engineering role. Significant drive and energy, strong engineering skills, and the ability to deliver a diverse programme to demanding time, target cost and quality requirements are essential attributes to succeed. Advantageous • Knowledge and application of appropriate Defence Standards for military vehicles • Use of software design tools such as Unigraphics NX, PTC Creo, GTX ImageCAD.
