Primary Teacher (Settlement School) - The Falkland Islands
£39,903 per annum + bonus and relocation package (dependent on qualifications & experience)
Are you a dynamic Primary Teacher with an adventurous side seeking a new challenge? Look no further!
We are very pleased to be working on behalf of the Falklands Islands Government to appoint a new Primary Teacher to work within one of their settlement schools to commence in April 2020. This a truly exciting position and will offer the right candidate the experience of a lifetime.
The Falkland Islands is a British Overseas Territory, with a full internal self-government, it covers a land area of 4700 square miles (12,000 square kilometres) and a coastline estimated at 800 miles (1,300 km). The archipelago consists of two main islands: West Falkland and East Falkland, and about 776 small and very small islands, mostly uninhabited. The Falkland Islands are a small, thriving, self-sufficient community with a British way of life, benefiting from excellent local services, beautiful scenery and the glorious absence of traffic jams!
Education on the Falkland Islands is unique. The Islands have a small population, with big ambitions. It will be your job to help turn these ambitions into reality.
The successful candidate will be appointed as sole teacher, teaching 7 children ranging from Foundation Stage 2 up to Year 5. The settlement school is based in Port Howard on West Falkland. Teachers have their own accommodation, in this case there is a flat attached to the school, allowing possibly the shortest commute in the world! This position would suit a couple or a single person, however the accommodation is not set up for a family with children.
Teaching a mixed age range offers many opportunities to create bespoke, personalised learning plans for the children in your school, outside of the constraints of a large whole class setting. The remote setting allows for amazing opportunities for learning in the environment and making education relevant to each learner to allow them to progress at a rate appropriate for them. You will be responsible for delivery of the 2014 English National Curriculum and EYFS Framework, therefore the successful candidate should have extensive knowledge across all areas of primary education.
Your main role will be to help your pupils achieve high levels of progress, in a happy and effective learning environment. You will possess an adventurous, dynamic and enthusiastic teaching style, with the commitment to differentiation and SEN inclusive practice.
Professionally, you will be a resilient and self-motivated individual, with qualified teacher status and at least 2 years post NQT teaching experience. Experience across all areas of primary education, the 2014 English Curriculum and EYFS Statutory Framework are essential for this position.
Interpersonal skills and confidence are key to this role, as you will be working at a distance from the main Primary School site and will be required to liaise with external agencies and parents. Ideally, you will have a bold and infectious personality, and show willing to contribute to extra-curricular activities within the rural location.
Personally, you should have a sense of adventure, resilience and a love for the outdoors due to the remote and rural nature of this position. You should also have a full driver's licence and be comfortable driving a 4x4 vehicle (this will be provided for you) over rough gravel or clay tracks and unseal road networks.
